How to Use a Minecraft BungeeCord Server via GPORTAL

One of the most beloved aspects of Minecraft are its multiplayer and its sense of community. Naturally, players all over the world want to play together, even when they are bound to certain Minecraft servers for one reason or another. But as you should expect, the Minecraft community is nothing if not clever when it comes to working around problems. This is where the idea for the Minecraft BungeeCord server was born.

What is BungeeCord?

BungeeCord is a widely used proxy server software developed by the SpigotMC team. It is primarily used to connect several individual Minecraft servers with each other. If you have trouble imagining what a BungeeCord server does, imagine it as a platform multiple servers exist on at the same time, somewhat of a meta-server. Because Minecraft BungeeCord servers allow many players from different servers to play together, it is often used for larger Minecraft projects.

However, while this project is very useful for a ton of players, you don’t automatically need Minecraft BungeeCord if you want to play in multiplayer. If you and your friends are on the same server anyway, Minecraft BungeeCord isn’t really necessary. A BungeeCord server usually only makes sense if there are at least 3 servers involved, that being 1x BungeeCord server and 2x different Minecraft gameservers.

And here comes the great news for all Bungee MC enthusiasts out there: we at GPORTAL now offer you ready-made servers so that you no longer have to obtain and set up Bungeecord externally. Instead, you can rent a BungeeCord server directly from G-Portal without having to set it up beforehand.
Can’t wait to get on a BungeeCord Minecraft server? Don’t hesitate to get your very own BungeeCord Server.

GPORTAL Minecraft Bungeecord: Important Things to Know

  • BungeeCord is ultimately its own server and therefore runs on its own hardware, independent of your GPORTAL Minecraft servers. If you set up your own Bungeecord server, try to use a computer with high processing power.
  • You will be able to see your Minecraft servers AND your BungeeCord server in your server overview.
  • A BungeeCord server alone does not allow you to play Minecraft – you need corresponding Minecraft servers so that you can then link them together via BungeeCord.
  • There is currently no option to select a specific game version but it will be implemented in the future.
  • To check the version you are currently playing on, you can use the following command:
    /bungee
  • To join a BungeeCord proxy network, you need to join on the respective BungeeCord IP and port.
  • If you want the server to recognize the original IP-addresses of all players, you need to enable IP forwarding.
  • Vanilla servers cannot use online mode and IP forwarding at the same time (see screenshot):

  • spigot or paper are required if you want to use BungeeCord (unless you use the VanillaCord plugin)
  • BungeeCord will disable online mode on all added servers and restart them once it is active.
  • Changing the modpack on any of the servers within the BungeeCord proxy will remove those servers from said network. You can still re-invite those servers, provided you use a spigot or paper fork.

How do I Add New Minecraft Servers to my BungeeCord Server?

In the basic settings of your BungeeCord server, you will find the following overview at the bottom. You can add new servers to your BungeeCord setup by writing their name on the indicated line.

Can Servers from Other Hosting Parties Join My BungeeCord Proxy Network?

Generally: yes, this is possible. If you use a BungeeCord server from GPORTAL, other servers can join your network (even from an external hoster). Depending on what system is running on their server, there are some changes that need to be made manually on their servers. In the following section, we have included some systems and what you have to change in order to ensure a working system.

Forge

If Forge older than version 1.12.2 is used, the Bungeeforge mod must be used on the Forge server.

  • online-mode=false

Fabric

Requires FabricProxy Legacy.

  • online-mode=false

Spigot (and spigot forks)

  • online-mode=false
  • spigot.yml
settings:
    bungeecord: true

Paper (and paper forks)

  • online-mode=false
  • spigot.yml
settings:
    bungeecord: true
  • config/paper-global.yml
proxies:
    bungee-cord:
            online-mode: <online mode setting in bungeecord config>

Attention:You only need to put online-mode to false if you are using IP-forwarding!

As you can see, Minecraft BungeeCord servers are a great deal for some multi-server action. You want it to be easy and support to be ready if needed? Then, a GPORTAL Minecraft Bungee server is the perfect option for you. Have fun server-traveling!
