Minecraft Respawn Anchor

The respawn anchor is a fairly new item, introduced with the 1.16 Update. Despite some players deeming it rather useless, it can be a powerful tool while exploring the Nether. We’re here to help answer your questions about this item, how to use a respawn anchor in Minecraft, how to craft it and what you should be aware of to make the most of it.

Overview Minecraft Respawn Anchor:

  • can be used to set a spawn point in the Nether
  • crafted with 6 crying obsidian and 3 glowstone
  • explodes if used in the overworld

What is a Minecraft Respawn Anchor?

While Minecraft itself tends to be a more cozy game, it still can be quite dangerous at times, putting you at risk of death. This is especially true for the Nether, whose uneven terrain and hostile mobs can put up quite a challenge. When you die, you respawn at your set spawn point. However, if you die in the Nether, getting back to where you died and retrieving your weapons and armor items can prove to be more difficult if you respawn back at your base in the overworld.

However, there are differences between the dimensions. Unlike the overworld, where players can use a bed to set their spawn point, beds are explosive in the Nether, making them unsuitable for this purpose. That’s where the respawn anchor comes into play, as it offers a safer alternative for adventurers exploring the dangerous Nether biomes. When charged with glowstone, it allows players to respawn within a certain radius of the anchor when they die in the Nether. This is especially helpful if you’re exploring a Nether fortress or a bastion remnant, as these structures can be very dangerous. Before going in, set up a respawn anchor and in case you die, you’ll have a much easier time getting back to the action, not having to track your way back from the overworld.

How to get a Respawn Anchor in Minecraft

To craft a respawn anchor you need to gather materials native to the Nether:

  • Crying Obsidian can be collected from chests in bastion remnants or by bartering with piglins. In the overworld you can find it in ruined portals.
  • Glowstone can be found in large quantities at the ceiling of the Nether. It can also be obtained by trading with cleric villagers or wandering traders or dropped by witches.

Once you’ve obtained enough resources, the respawn anchor recipe looks like this:

6x crying obsidian + 3x glowstone = 1x respawn anchor

How to Use a Respawn Anchor in Minecraft

To use the respawn anchor, it needs to be charged with glowstone. After you place the respawn anchor on a solid block in the Nether, right-click on the respawn anchor while holding glowstone to charge it. Once it is charged, right-click again to set your spawn point.

Each piece of glowstone increases the charging level by one, indicated by a yellow circle on the anchor. If you die, you respawn next to the block and it loses one charge.

You should also keep track of the charging level. If you run out of charges and die, you respawn in the overworld around the world spawn at x=0 and y=0, as the anchor overrides the spawn point set by your bed. The respawn anchor also works on servers on multiplayer mode, but the charges will be split amongst the players.

Attention! The respawn anchor can only be used in the Nether. Trying to use it in the overworld will cause it to explode, similarly to a bed in the Nether or End, which will result in damage to your health bar and destruction of the surrounding blocks, similar to a creeper explosion.

Conclusion: Minecraft Respawn Anchor

By understanding how to craft, charge, and use the respawn anchor effectively, players can enhance their survival experience in the dangerous Nether dimension, making it a crucial tool for any adventurer in Minecraft. The crafting materials may be a bit difficult to obtain, but in return the respawn anchor makes dying in the Nether less frustrating. If you want to try it out yourself and explore the Nether more safely, we recommend a Minecraft server from G-Portal. Happy adventuring!
