Minecraft Lead

If you ever tried to make a farm with animals in your Minecraft world, you know how difficult it may be to get the animals to follow you around. Luckily, there is an item that can make that task a whole lot easier. A lead in Minecraft is a handy tool for taming, transporting and organizing mobs. Whether you’re wrangling farm animals, leading llamas or just tidying up your base, a Minecraft lead is a must-have. This guide covers everything from how to make a lead, where to find it and how to use it.

Overview Minecraft Lead:

  • used to lead mobs around
  • craft: 4x strings and 1x slimeball
  • can be used for decorative purposes

How to Get a Lead in Minecraft

Essentially, there are two ways to get a lead in minecraft. You can either collect it as loot or craft it yourself. Both ways have their advantages. Finding it, you don’t have to collect ingredients. However, the places where you could find it, turned out to be quite challenging to find themselves.

Where to Find a Lead in Minecraft

You can get leads by looting a few structures, such as:

Leads are found in chests in all of the above, except the trail ruins, where you can find leads in suspicious gravel instead. If you encounter a wandering trader, you can also get your hands on 2 leads by killing the trader or the llamas.

How do You Make a Lead in Minecraft

With only 4x strings and 1x slimeball you can craft a lead. Just follow the Minecraft lead recipe:

4x string + 1x slimeball = 2x lead

Place the slimeball in the center of the crafting window, then one string in the bottom right corner. Put the remaining 3 strings in an L-shape in the top left corner of the grid, and you have successfully crafted 2 leads.
The Minecraft lead recipe is one of the harder ones to craft due to its ingredients. While string is easily accessible from spiders, the slimeball is a bit more difficult. You will either have to find a swamp, where slimes naturally spawn, or look for slime chunks to get your hands on this item.

How to Use a Lead in Minecraft

While the most important function of the lead is to move around mobs there are also other purposes for it besides that.

Leashing Mobs

You can use leads to move around animals and other mobs to a designated location, be it for a farm or just to add a rare and exclusive animal to your base. Leads work on most passive mobs, though you’ve probably never seen one on an allay, armadillo or parrot. To the group of animals that are more likely to be put on a Minecraft lead by players belong:

However, there are also two hostile mobs you can put on a lead:

  • hoglin
  • zoglin

Wondering how to use a lead in Minecraft? Just equip the lead in your hotbar. Then right-click on the mob you want to leash and you can then lead it around your world to where you want it to be. Additionally, you can lead multiple animals at once, but each requires their own lead.

Just don’t move too far too quickly while leading animals. A lead can only stretch 10 blocks. The animal will follow you, but if you move too fast, the lead breaks.

Tip:Always retrieve your Minecraft lead. They drop on the ground next to the mob if broken, so pick them up to reuse or they will despawn.

When you are leading a mob, right-clicking on a fence post will tie the animal to the post so it stays there. Multiple leads can be attached to the same fence post. Minecraft leads can be broken by right-clicking on the mob again, by right-clicking or destroying the fence post or by moving away from the mob too fast.

Fun Fact:If you put a llama on a leash and there are other llamas around, they will follow behind, forming a caravan of up to 10 animals. You can equip these llamas with chests, to make for an alternative method of transporting a lot of items across your world.

H3 A Minecraft Lead, Elytra and a Boat

Since the 1.21 update, a feature which had been exclusive to Bedrock is now available on Java Edition. You can now attach leads to boats to drag them behind you. Combine this with an elytra and you’ve got yourself a very effective way to move around mobs, but also villagers over great distances through the air, without having to worry about unnavigable terrain.

Conclusion: Minecraft Lead

Leads are particularly useful in Minecraft to lead animals, such as cows, pigs, bees and llamas. They make herding and transportation much easier! They are also incredibly versatile, making them an essential tool for farmers, builders and adventurers. Make sure to always have one in your inventory when exploring the world on a Minecraft server from G-Portal: you never know when you might encounter a rare animal you want to take home and impress your friends with!

Now that you know how to make a Minecraft lead, where to find one and how to use it, you’re ready to be unleashed and to wrangle the world like a pro! Happy crafting and leashing!
