Minecraft Pigs

Minecraft pigs are mobs in the game that appear both in the overworld and as piglins or hoglins in the Nether. In the overworld, they are peaceful, can be bred and even ridden, while in the Nether they are usually hostile. However, all different kinds of Minecraft pigs take an important role in the Minecraft gameplay due to their versatile uses and unique characteristics.

Overview Minecraft Pigs:

  • peaceful mobs
  • breed with carrots
  • source of Minecraft pork
  • can be ridden

Oink in Peace – The Friendly Minecraft Pigs

In the overworld, there are many peaceful creatures like cows, chickens, sheep and of course, Minecraft pigs. Unlike other peaceful animals, pigs are only useful for their meat, which restores a substantial 4 hearts in the health bar when cooked. It’s even more nutritious than chicken meat or mutton, which can make a crucial difference in survival mode.

Can You Breed Pigs in Minecraft?

If you want to breed Minecraft pigs, that’s relatively easy as they are excellent for this purpose. Like their real-life counterparts, Minecraft pigs are not picky eaters. They consume:

  • carrots
  • potatoes
  • beetroots

Thanks to these dietary habits, they are perfect for breeding, as most of these foods can be quickly farmed or found in chests in villages.

If you are nearby pigs, you’ll notice they follow you when you hold their food, similar to other mobs. This behavior is especially practical if you want to keep a few pigs near your base. Simply lure Minecraft pigs with food and guide them into a fenced area.

How to Tame Pigs in Minecraft

Although you can’t tame Minecraft pigs like cats or wolves, you can feed them, which feels somewhat like taming. Since they don’t run away from you – unless attacked – you can easily keep them as pets and even lead them on a leash.

The Minecraft Pig Farm

If you’re looking to harvest meat from these cute little creatures, a Minecraft pig farm is the way to go. As with other farms, different designs and functionalities need to be considered, along with the farm’s size. Larger farms are often more complex and take up more space. Online, you’ll find simple and resource-efficient designs for your first Minecraft pig farm.

Attention! The term ‘pig farm’ often refers to setups where the mobs are not only bred but also killed for pork. Keep this in mind if you just want a lot of pigs in your Minecraft world.

A Beginner’s Minecraft Pig Farm

To build this farm, you’ll need some materials, though they’re easy to get. Ensure you have plenty of iron for crafting the necessary items:

Once you have the materials, follow these steps to create your pig farm:

  1. Start with a base of 1×2 blocks of your choice and add a second layer on top.
  2. In the 3rd row, place two dispensers and use blocks of your choice again for the 4th row so that the dispensers are surrounded by blocks from both below and above.
  3. In the 5th row, place another block on the right and an additional dispenser on the left, followed by blocks of your choice in the 6th row.
  4. Now, place a trapdoor below the top dispenser so that it can be flipped downward. Repeat this next to the block on the right.
  5. Build a tower 6 blocks high with blocks of your choice diagonally in front of your wall on the left. (The tower should not block anything but should touch the wall at one corner.)
  6. Repeat this step on the right side, but instead of the 3rd block, place an observer with its face pointing forward and the red light facing backward (the trapdoors should face forward).
  7. Place a button on the observer’s face and another on one of the top blocks of the wall.
  8. Now, move back down. Place a double chest (by placing two chests side by side) one block away from the wall so that a 1×2 block gap remains between the chests, the wall and the corner towers.
  9. Place a hopper connected to each chest in the gap between the chest and the wall, ensuring the hoppers are linked to the chest. Then cover both hoppers with a slab.
  10. Place two more slabs above the chest with a half-block gap between them (the slabs should together form the height of one block but be staggered, allowing the chest to open). You may need a temporary block on one of the towers to place the slabs, which you can remove afterward.
  11. Place 8 glass blocks in a 2×4 wall on the slabs above the chest, making sure they reach the same height as the back wall.
  12. Next, move to the back of the wall. Position a block on the observer to cover it. Place another block diagonally below it. From the side, this should look like a large step with a hollow space underneath.
  13. Cover the backs of the two side-by-side observers with blocks and lay a redstone trail from the lower left block to the far right (a total of 3 blocks). This should make a clicking sound when pressing the button on the observer.
  14. Returning to the front, place 4 ladders on the left tower starting from the second bottom block. This allows you to climb the wall and guide Minecraft pigs up the ladder if needed.
  15. Place a lava bucket in each of the bottom dispensers by right-clicking. Then, place a water bucket in the top dispenser.
  16. Close the trapdoors to separate the water and lava dispensers.

That’s it for building the farm – now for the most important part: the Minecraft pigs!

  1. Flip the trapdoors up and bring pigs into the farm. Use spawn eggs or lure pigs up the ladder with carrots. Bring as many pigs as possible to stand on the trapdoors. Piglets should fall through the trapdoor.
  2. Place fences above the pigs to ensure they don’t accidentally wander where they shouldn’t.

When the pigs breed with the help of their food, piglets will fall through the trapdoors. Once the piglets grow up, briefly press the button on the observer to activate the lava and the freshly cooked pork will be collected directly into the double chest through the hoppers. While the instructions might seem long, the process is straightforward and you’ll have your own Minecraft pig farm in no time!

Can You Ride Minecraft Pigs?

A small but neat little feature: yes, you can saddle and ride Minecraft pigs. Place a saddle on a pig by right-clicking it with a saddle in hand. Then, right-click again to ride. The catch? You can’t steer without a carrot on a stick, crafted from a fishing rod and a carrot. Without it, the pig will just continue wandering around randomly.

1x fishing rod + 1x carrot = 1x carrot on a stick

Other Types of Minecraft Pigs:

If you’ve built or used a nether portal, you know there’s a lot to explore in other dimensions. Even though the End offers many adventures, we’ll focus on Nether creatures, where pig-like mobs roam.

Piglins

These gold-obsessed mobs are found in bastion remnants, crimson forests and nether wastes. They’re usually hostile unless you’re wearing at least one piece of gold armor. Although gold armor is weak, piglins have a major advantage: you can barter with them, similarly to trading with villagers, but with a twist. Toss them some gold ingots and they’ll give you a random item in return.

Attention! If chased by piglins, remember they’re not immune to fire, even though they call the Nether their home. A fire resistance potion can save you, but be cautious not to grant them the same effect accidentally.

Hoglins

Even more hostile than piglins are the bigger, boar-like mobs found in crimson forests. hoglins are aggressive and the Nether’s only food source, dropping up to 4 raw pork and 2 leather. Their attack style resembles iron golems, launching players into the air. Even their piglets are hostile but will retreat briefly after being hit before attacking again.

You can breed hoglins using crimson fungi, but don’t confuse them with warped fungi, which hoglins fear and will avoid at all costs. Hoglins share another trait with piglins: they take damage when they touch fire or lava.

Fun Fact:Just as piglins turn into zombified piglins when entering the overworld, hoglins transform into zombified hoglins, known as zoglins.

Conclusion: Minecraft Pigs
