An ender chest is a rare and powerful variation of the regular chest. While it is very hard to find, its unique upsides balance out the long and difficult way to obtain it. Both of these mobs are relentless, hard to kill and can deal a lot of damage in a short amount of time. Moreover, you also need eyes of ender to access the End in the first place, from where it is easier to find an ender chest. Due to these factors, an ender chest is an item you should aim for during the end game, not early on.

How Does an Ender Chest Work?

An ender chest is unique and different from a regular chest in many aspects, so we will discuss them from several different perspectives. Before we go into detail, we should discuss what you need to do if you want to move an ender chest, be it one you crafted or one you find in the End. While you can destroy an ender chest with any pickaxe (even though obsidian requires a diamond or netherite pickaxe), you should ensure that the pickaxe is enchanted with the ‘silk touch’ enchantment. If it is, you will get the ender chest as an item, but if the pickaxe is not enchanted, it will only drop the 8 obsidian blocks that were used in its creation, causing you to lose an eye of ender.

What Makes an Ender Chest Unique?

While an ender chest looks very much like a chest made of wood, only black, its real advantage lies beyond the chest-top. While regular chests only have one inventory, the ender chest inventory is shared between all ender chests in the world. If you play in multiplayer, each player has their own inventory when they access an ender chests. The shared inventory also prevents the destruction of your blocks and items when the ender chest is destroyed, so don’t worry if the ender chest is attacked by something like the ender dragon. This fearsome boss can damage the ender chest, even though it is made of obsidian, which the dragon can’t normally damage.

How a Minecraft Ender Chest Interacts with Other Objects

Even though it looks pitch-black, an ender chest does emit a light with a light level of 7. In contrast to regular chests, there is no double ender chest, which means that you should ideally use the ender chest to store your most valuable items. You can greatly increase the inventory of your chest by using something you can also find in the End, however: shulker boxes. These can be crafted by combining 2 shulker shells and a regular chest:

While these boxes have 27 inventory slots, they can also be stored within an ender chest, increasing the number of inventory slots to 729 (27 shulker box inventory slots x 27 ender chest inventory slots.) You can also dye shulker boxes to let them fit your personal taste. With these measures, you can greatly increase your inventory space, though sorting it may become more difficult as a result.

While it may seem like the regular chest would be somewhat useless when compared to the ender chest, there are some use cases in which the regular chest is better than the Minecraft ender chest. This includes redstone compatibility, as an ender chest cannot interact with hoppers, droppers, comparators or pistons (they can neither be pushed nor pulled.) Similarly, you cannot put an ender chest on top of an animal, such as donkeys, mules or llamas.
