How to Get String in Minecraft

While Minecraft string might not appear to be that important at first, it is part of a high number of recipes. And while candles, leads and looms are not a player’s first priority when they start a new game, fishing rods, bows, crossbows and the recently added bundle are pretty useful. As the demand for Minecraft string is so high, it can be tough to fulfill said demand if you don’t know how to get string in Minecraft. This is where we come in and tell you the easiest ways to find string in Minecraft early as well as the most sustainable ways to find as much string as you need.

Overview Minecraft String:

  • ingredient for many recipes
  • found by killing spiders & other mobs
  • uncraftable, must be found in the world
  • used for redstone tripwire hooks

2 Ways to Get Minecraft String

There are two major ways to obtain Minecraft string:

  • killing certain mobs
  • finding it in the world

We will have a close look at each of these methods separately, starting with killing mobs.

How to Get String in Minecraft: Killing Mobs

The following mobs drop Minecraft string:

As with most drop-related loot, you can make these mobs drop more if your weapon is enchanted with the ‘Looting’ enchantment. The most profitable targets are lava striders, which can drop between two and eight (Java Edition) or five (Bedrock Edition, where strider drops are not affected by looting) pieces of Minecraft string. However, while lava striders are common in the Nether, spiders are easily found in places with a low light level such as caves and mineshafts. Finally, while cats do drop Minecraft string upon death, you should tame them instead. Tamed cats sometimes present you with a gift after sleeping in a bed, which includes string. So, while you can kill one of these animals to find some Minecraft string quickly, taming it and reaping the benefits over time will pay off in the long term.

How to Get String in Minecraft: Collecting

As with killing mobs, there is more than one way to find string while roaming through the different biomes of the world:

  • breaking cobwebs & tripwires
  • fishing
  • trading
  • chests

Cobwebs are produced by the spiders mentioned above and as such, spawn in similar environments. These include strongholds, abandoned villages, woodland mansions and trial chambers. Remember to take a sword or trident with you, as these places are often crawling with mobs. Similar to cobwebs, tripwires also drop string whenever they are destroyed. Look out for the traps that are usually connected to the tripwire hook.

In contrast, fishing and trading with villagers are far more peaceful. Villagers are willing to trade emeralds for string, provided they are fletchers or fishermen on the journeyman and novice level, respectively. If you need some Minecraft string while in the Nether and don’t want to hurt the lava striders, you can also try to barter with piglins. These Nether dwellers can give three to nine pieces of string if you throw them a gold ingot. As for fishing, Minecraft string is more of a small benefit than a primary goal. The chance of finding Minecraft string while fishing is only 0.5%, and that chance actually decreases if you enchant the fishing rod with ‘Luck of the Sea’, as that enchantment increases your chance of finding fish.

Chests containing string spawn in a lot of places, the most relevant of which are pillager outposts, desert temples and bastion remnants found in the Nether. However, all of these places contain a lot of mobs, so you should stay away from them until you have some respectable armor and weapons – for which you most likely need Minecraft string. Thus, you should view the string you can find there as something of an added bonus rather than your main goal, similar to fishing.

Minecraft String Uses

So, how do you make string in Minecraft? As it turns out, you cannot. You need to find string with the methods described above. However, when you have enough string to use in projects, you can unlock a lot of Minecraft string recipes. We will present you with 3 of the most interesting ones:

A) Bundle:

1x string + 1x leather = 1x bundle

Bundles can be used to put several different items or blocks in a single inventory slot. You can also use dyes to change the bundle’s color, so you can tell them apart more easily.

B) White Wool:

4x string = 1x white wool block

Similar to the bundle you can change this block’s color by applying dye. Wool blocks (of any color) can be used to craft other items like beds, banners and paintings

C) Scaffolding:

1x string + 6x bamboo = 6x scaffolding

Scaffolding is more limited in its use than the other two Minecraft string recipes, though it is extremely useful in what it does. Scaffolding, as in real life, is mostly used during construction. You can use scaffolding to climb onto your building projects and do your work without being afraid of falling to your death.

Lastly, string is also used for creating tripwire hooks, which you can combine with dispensers and other redstone constructs to lure your enemies into deadly traps. Keep in mind, however, that tripwire can only be used once – as it snaps when it is triggered.

Conclusion: Minecraft String

So, if you wondered what to do with string in Minecraft, you now know what you can do and where to find it. But even if you fight yourself through the hordes of spiders that keep that Minecraft string from you, if you scour every chests available, you still need to go on an adventure to get the most out of your Minecraft string. So don’t dawdle and get yourself a Minecraft Server from G-Portal. Because there, you will be able to go on fantastic adventures, be they to find Minecraft string or to use the gear the string gives you. But most importantly: Have some string… uhm, fun!
