Minecraft Potions

Minecraft: Brewing Potions Step by Step

An exciting activity in Minecraft is brewing potions. Have you ever seen a fellow player throwing a potion, or found a brewing stand but didn’t know what to do? Do you have an alchemist in you who would like to learn more about this fine art of Minecraft potions? The reasons to get excited about brewing are just as diverse as the potions themselves!

Preparations – Before You Can Brew in Minecraft

Every alchemist should have a suitable workplace. Unlike the imaginations of a chaotic laboratory, here it’s a bit simpler: a brewing stand. Minecraft continues to follow the principle that you, as a player, create your own workstation and produce with it. But without ingredients and containers, no potion can be brewed properly anyway. Therefore, there are a few items that you should gather before you start your experiments

The Brewing Stand Recipe

As mentioned earlier, this stand forms your own little laboratory. There are two ways to obtain it: find it or build it yourself. So if you’re out and about, keep an eye out, for example at churches in villages or in igloos. If that takes too long, you can build and place it yourself. All you need is three cobblestone blocks and a blaze rod. The cobblestone blocks need to be fill the bottom row of the crafting window and the blaze rod gets put in the middle field of the window. It is as simple as this.

3x cobblestone + 1x blaze rod = brewing stand

Minecraft Water Bottles: Do Not Drink!

Liquids are notoriously difficult to carry in your bare hands. Therefore, you should craft some water bottles before brewing. This process is also fairly simple. You only need three glass blocks, one in each of the outermost fields of the second row, and one in the middle field of the third row of the crafting window. This will give you three glass bottles, the ideal number to start brewing!

3x glass blocks = 3x glass bottles

How to craft glass bottles for potions

Since Minecraft potions require you to mix different substances, it’s important that you put water in the bottles after you’ve made them. You can then mix a wide variety of Minecraft potions from these water bottles. Sometimes you can also get water bottles from fishing, or from killing a witch.

Blaze Powder Brings the Necessary Energy

Just like in a real kiln, your brewing stand needs an energy source, of course. Without it, you can’t brew potions. Minecraft has provided blaze powder as a suitable source of energy. Don’t worry, you don’t need tons of the powder! One advantage of alchemy in Minecraft: brewing doesn’t seem to cost much energy. Thus, one load of blaze powder is enough for 20 brewing processes. You only need to add a new portion after that.

Basic equipment for brewing potions

Are you ready? Nothing stands in the way between you and alchemy once you have the following items together:

  • 1x brewing stand
  • 3x glass bottles with water
  • 1x blaze powder

Alchemy in Minecraft – Brewing Made Easy

Let’s take a closer look at the crafting window of the Miencraft brewing stand for a moment. When you open it, you will see an interesting picture. On the top left is the field for the fuel or energy source. There you have to insert the blaze powder. On the top right, there is a single field in which you can insert various substances and materials later. Below this, there are three fields with a picture of a bottle. You simply insert your water bottles there and off you go!

To the left of the main ingredient you will see small bubbles. These show you that the brewing process is running. If you want to know how long the process still takes, look at the arrow on the right side of the window. Still, there are a few things you should pay attention to: the materials and the duration. A brewing process starts as soon as at least one of the three lower places is occupied and an ingredient is inserted at the top. One ingredient can be used to make three potions at the bottom. Once this is done, it counts as one brewing process.

Caution! If you close the brewing window before the process is completed, it will be aborted. Nevertheless, it will count as a complete brewing process and will reduce the amount of blaze powder present in the left burn chamber.

Since the ingredient added determines the type of a potion, you’re probably wondering which potion you should brew first. The best choice is the “awkward potion”. It belongs to a small group of Minecraft potions called base potions.

Minecraft Potion – Recipes, Types & the Most Useful Examples

Minecraft potions can be divided into several groups. In summary, these are: base potions, effect potions and upgraded/extended effect potions. Depending on what kind of potion you want to brew, there are a few things to consider and for each potion there is a special recipe.

Minecraft Base Potions

As the name suggests, these potions provide the base for other Minecraft potions, but otherwise have no use. Strictly speaking, only the awkward potion is necessary for this. For this you need nether wart. If it is not yet in your inventory, you should go to the Nether for a short while, because you can only find it there. Afterwards, you put them into the ingredient box and off you go with your very first awkward potion!

Other base potions:

  • Mundane Potion
  • Thick Potion

Minecraft Effect Potions

Again, it’s in the name: these Minecraft potions have a specific effect. Some support you by making you faster or more resistant. Other potions damage your enemies when you use them on them. The potions can often be brewed in sequence. In addition, each potion has its own duration of the individual effect. Which Minecraft potions from this group could be the most useful ones for you?

Potion of Night Vision

Are you brave enough to venture outside at night and face the dangers of the world? But you also want to see where you are going to find your way back home, or to be able to detect possible attackers? This is exactly what this potion can help you with!

Potion of Fire Resistance

Do you know the feeling of fear that you could fall victim to lava at any moment? That shouldn’t stop you from running your errands in the Nether and enjoying the game. So if you want to wander around fiery areas with a sense of security, it’s worth taking a look at this fire resistance potion!

Potion of Water Breathing

If you prefer to avoid the heat and enjoy the cool water, you’ve probably experienced this before: you were so distracted by the underwater world, that you forgot you didn’t have any gills? If you have had enough of death due to drowning, you should get this water breathing potion; enjoy diving again and be able to breathe underwater for a longer time!

Other effect potions

positive effect (+):

  • Potion of Healing (+)
  • Potion of Invisibility (+)
  • Potion of Leaping (+)
  • Potion of Regeneration (+)
  • Potion of Slow Falling (+)
  • Potion of Strength (+)
  • Potion of Swiftness (+)

negative effect (-):

  • Potion of Harming (-)
  • Potion of Poison (-)
  • Potion of Slowness (-)
  • Potion of Weakness (-)

Upgraded/Extended Effect Potions

What you should further know about Minecraft potions: they can be upgraded or extended.  There is a special ingredient for both processes. You can apply glowstone dust to a potion and upgrade it, i.e. intensifying its effect. However, this also means that the duration of the effect is reduced. You can achieve the opposite with the redstone dust. If you add it to one of your Minecraft potions, you’ll extend the duration of its effect. It is important to note that not all potions can be extended.

potion + glowstone dust = increase the effect/decrease the duration

potion + redstone dust = extend duration of the effect

How Do I Apply Potions to Enemies?

This question is important! An enemy or mob is unlikely to just wait for you to attack and then also take one of your potions that could harm them. So how can you do that in Minecraft? Potions can be transformed into splash potions by adding gunpowder. You don’t have to drink them like water anymore, but you throw them at the enemy and they unfold their effects, so among other things they make the enemy slower or he suffers more damage from attacks.

Minecraft Potions – What Else Is There to Know

  • The effect of potions is neutralized when you drink milk.
  • You can see the remaining duration of a potion in the inventory and at the top right corner of the screen.
  • There are potions that cannot be brewed; can only be found in certain modes or only exist in certain Minecraft editions.
  • You’ll get the “Alchemy” achievement when you take a potion from the brewing stand’s inventory or when you brew a potion with Water Bottle as an ingredient, such as the awkward potion.
  • Potions cannot be stacked in the inventory.
