The Minecraft Candle

A Minecraft candle is a versatile and decorative item that can help you light up your house in a charming (and customizable) way. It adds a cozy atmosphere to buildings and provides a range of practical uses beyond just being a light source. In this article, we’ll walk you through how to make candles in Minecraft, including the candle recipe and offer some creative ideas to make the most of them in your world, such as coloring them. Minecraft also allows you to put a candle on a cake, which is then known as a Minecraft cake candle.

Overview Minecraft Candle:

  • light-emitting block
  • can be dyed in 16 different colors
  • crafted easily
  • used with cake or as a light source

How to Get Candles in Minecraft

In general, there are 2 ways to easily find candles in Minecraft. Their colored versions can be found in chests, while the regular candle recipe is rather easy to follow. So, let’s go over both options, starting with finding one.

How to Find Candles in Minecraft

When it comes to finding a Minecraft candle, you have 3 places you should definitely look at:

The first are trail ruins, where you can find suspicious gravel. If you use a brush on that gravel, you have a 17.6% chance to find a candle. Within the suspicious gravel it can be brown, red, green or purple, but each color has the same chance of appearing. The second promising place is the ancient city. This structure, which can be found in the deep dark biome, has a lot of candles. They can appear both inside chests as well as in the rooms as a light source. Finally, the recently added trial chambers also use the Minecraft candle as a way to give the player a light in the dark. However, all of these areas have one thing in common: They really only become available late in the game. Especially ancient cities and trial chambers are challenging biomes that can easily kill inexperienced players if they go there too quickly.

How to Craft Candles in Minecraft

Besides finding them in several different biomes, you can also use the candle recipe. The game provides you with most of the necessary crafting ingredients early in the game, so you can use a Minecraft candle instead of a torch or a lantern to provide light in the night. The Minecraft candle recipe itself is quite simple:

1x string + 1x honeycomb = 1x candle

From this point on, if you want to craft colored candles, Minecraft only asks that you provide an additional dye:

1x undyed candle + 1x dye = 1x colored candle

As you need a dye to create colored candles, Minecraft has 17 different candles in store for you (those being the 16 different colors of the dyes and the uncolored candle.) Before you combine a Minecraft candle with a dye, think twice if you really want said color; once a candle has been dyed, it cannot be dyed again. While the candle recipe is pretty simple, it provides you with ample opportunity to craft these little light sources. String can be looted from spiders, while  honeycomb can be obtained by using shears on a beehive.

Uses for a Minecraft Candle

Now that you have a multitude of differently colored candles, you might want some ideas of what you can do with them. Minecraft candles have several functions that make them an essential item in your inventory. If you want to ignite the flame on your candle, you should keep a flint and steel or a fire charge at hand.

A) Lighting Your World

The most basic use for any Minecraft candle is to provide smoothing Minecraft candle light. When placed on a surface, a single candle offers a light level of 3, which can be increased by stacking multiple candles on top of each other. If you do that, all of the candles you stack must have the same color. Up to 4 candles can be stacked in a single block space, creating a bright and atmospheric candle holder with a light level of 12.

B) Decoration

A Minecraft candle is a fantastic way to enhance the aesthetic of your builds. Candles can be used in any type of structure, from medieval castles to modern homes, depending on your city’s vibe. Whether placed on tables, in chandeliers or along pathways, a Minecraft candle adds a sense of warmth and ambiance that torches or lanterns can’t quite replicate. Experiment with different colors and placements to create the perfect lighting for your build.

C) The Minecraft Cake Candle

As you may have already heard, a Minecraft candle can also be used with a cake. By placing a candle on top of a cake, you create a festive look for any celebration. Simply take a candle into your hand and use it to interact with the cake. You can also blow out the candle on the cake by right-clicking it, which causes a spark and makes the cake consumable. If you eat the cake, the Minecraft candle will simply drop.

D) Floating Candles in Minecraft

Similar to the Minecraft cake candle, you may have already seen this phenomenon before: a Minecraft candle, floating mid-air with no support. In Minecraft, floating candles are not a built-in feature, but you can create the illusion of candles hovering in mid-air using creative techniques. If you play on a version before the 20w48a snapshot, you can place any Minecraft candle on a non-solid block, including cobwebs, or chests. Especially when it comes to cobwebs, the illusion of a floating candle can be created easily.
With the current state of the game however, candles must be placed on solid blocks – although they do not fall when said block is destroyed. Thus, if you place a Minecraft candle on a stone block, for example, you can simply break that block again, creating a floating candle. Minecraft often updates its mechanics though, so beware that candles might not flow forever.

Conclusion: Minecraft Candle

A Minecraft candle is more than just a light source – candles are a decorative tool that adds warmth, personality and atmosphere to your builds. Whether you’re lighting up a dim hallway, celebrating with a Minecraft candle on a cake or creating a cozy corner in your home, candles can elevate the ambiance of your world. With the ability to craft them in different colors, the possibilities for creativity are endless. So, gather your string, honeycomb and dye, and start experimenting with candles on a Minecraft server from G-Portal to make your world even more enchanting!
