When you first start your journey, the world appears to be immense. So many different biomes make up the overworld that it’s easy to forget how much space lies in the Nether, waiting to be uncovered. But if you want to enter into this fiery realm, you need to use a Minecraft Nether portal and crafting it can seem daunting at first. You’re wondering how to make a Nether portal? How do You Make a Minecraft Portal?

Before we go into details, we should make it clear that we are not talking about the End portal here. That portal can be found inside a stronghold and requires eyes of ender to become active. In contrast, a Minecraft Nether portal only needs some obsidian and some fire to allow you to stroll into the hellish Nether biomes. 
But how do you build a Nether portal? In general, you have 2 options: First, you can build a Nether portal. Minecraft does allow you to put a Nether portal anywhere you want, but you need the obsidian blocks for it. Second, you can repair a portal you find in any biome both in the overworld and in the Nether, with the deep dark biome being the sole exception. While the first option is more difficult, it allows you to place the Minecraft Nether portal wherever you like, though you have to find all of the obsidian blocks yourself.

On the other hand, finding a ruined portal can prove somewhat difficult, even though they can spawn almost anywhere. And because we’re talking about Minecraft, ‘broken Nether portal’ can mean a number of different things. The portal you found might only need a few blocks of obsidian to become complete, or it might require several; it all depends on chance. However, if you happen to find a Minecraft broken Nether portal, you can still use the obsidian you find to construct your own.

How to Build a Minecraft Nether Portal

If you want to build a Nether portal, Minecraft asks you to provide mainly obsidian. At least 10 blocks are required for a functioning portal. You can find obsidian wherever water and lava connect, as well as when finding a Minecraft broken Nether portal. Remember that only a pickaxe made from diamond or netherite is strong enough to break obsidian blocks. Once you have enough obsidian blocks, you have to arrange them so that a portal with 5×4 blocks is created. If you want to use less blocks, you can cut the corner blocks. 

In short, this is how to build a portal to the Nether:

  1. Collect at least 10x obsidian blocks.
  2. Arrange them in a 5×4 frame.
  3. Put a flame inside the portal.

However, if you want a Minecraft Nether portal that looks the part, you can add more obsidian blocks so that the final product measures 23×23 blocks, anything larger will not function as a portal. Once the portal frame is done, you need to ignite it somehow. You can use flint & steel, a fire charge or a burning sword or arrow; the exact fire source is not that important. This will activate the portal, opening the wide and dark world of the Nether for your exploits.

How to Get to the Nether in Minecraft

Once your Minecraft Nether portal is active, you need to step into the portal frame and remain there for 80 regular game ticks (〜4 seconds). You can also use the portal to teleport mobs to the Nether, except for the ender dragon and the wither. Once the teleport is complete, you will be transported to the closest Nether portal present inside the Nether. From there, you have to fend for yourself, though you can always go back through the same portal – they’re two-way portals, after all!

And this is how to make a Nether portal. While the process itself is pretty simple, gathering enough obsidian can be difficult if you don’t have access to diamonds. However, you can also interpret this fact as a warning: if you lack diamonds, you are not ready for the Nether. While the overworld can be threatening, especially at night, where the skeletons and zombies appear, it is a walk in the park when compared to the Nether. There, lava, darkness and the ever-present mobs threaten to destroy your career as an adventurer really quickly. Thus, while it is understandable that you want to advance to the next step of the game, you should take your time and prepare for an excursion to the Nether thoroughly. These preparations can include crafting potions of fire resistance, good armor and strong weapons, possibly enchanted ones. And of course, going into the Nether together makes the whole thing less scary. Therefore, you can use a Minecraft server from G-Portal to venture into the Nether together with some companions.
