The vibrant modding community adds a completely new spin to the Minecraft formula. One type of mod we want to celebrate today are the Minecraft RPG mods. To that end, we will go through some of the (in our humble opinion) best Minecraft RPG mods out there. The order we present these in doesn’t really matter. Not every mod is for every player, so if any of them sound interesting to you, you can simply check out the links to their curseforge.com page we have provided and check them out for yourself.

deadalus_dev's Dungeon Heroes Mod

Strengths:

• intricate dungeons
• diverse heroes
• engaging combat system

This mod is actually a Minecraft roleplay mod pack, combining several of deadalus_dev’s previous entries in the RPG series into one solid pack. These mods add several new ways of playing the game to your Minecraft world, including new weapons as well as spells and jewelry. This also comes with many new dungeon areas that offer traps and loot galore. To help you explore them, you can play as a mighty paladin that shields their friends from harm or as a knowledgeable wizard that can destroy mobs with a snap of their fingers.

However, there might be some hindrances for certain players. The massive overhaul of the game can seem daunting at first, inflicting choice paralysis to people unfamiliar with the systems. The dungeons also have a few downsides. Their large scope can lead to performance issues, forcing you to allocate more RAM to your Minecraft application. The final problem can occur because of the dungeons’ quality. Ironically, because they are made so well, the overworld’s biomes can seem a bit empty in comparison. But if you have a really good machine at your disposal and don’t mind spending most of your time in-game underground, the Dungeon Heroes mod is a solid choice for fans of Minecraft RPG mods.

Scimiguy's Advent of Ascension Mod

Strengths:

Similar to the RPG series, Scimiguy’s Advent of Ascension brings a massive amount of new content, with 20 new Dimensions and hundreds of new mobs and gear. Among these are 35 boss mobs that offer not only difficult challenges but also unique gear as a reward, motivating you to face even dangers that seem overwhelming at first. To help you, the mod also adds new skills that make combat more complex. In combination with the colorful visuals, Advent of Ascension is the ideal Minecraft RPG for all players that long to put more hours into their journey.

However, with a mod so large in scale, there can be some balancing issues, making encounters too hard or too easy. With time and new updates however, these issues will surely be mitigated or even removed altogether. Also, crafting all of the necessary ingredients for the new gear can be quite time consuming. So, for the casual RPG enjoyer, the mod might be too much. For any dedicated fan of Minecraft RPG mods out there Advent of Ascension holds many hours of exploration, combat and fun.

franciscogolden's Cisco's Fantasy Medieval RPG [Ultimate]

Strengths:

• comprehensive crafting system

While the first two Minecraft RPG mods we’ve looked at mostly focused on introducing new gear and mobs, this one brings a completely new aspect to the game: quests and quest rewards. Additionally, this Minecraft roleplay mod pack also allows you to build your very own kingdom and protect its cities from invasions, allowing for an even deeper gaming experience. Another solid concept is mob scaling: Instead of leaving mobs with the same strength forever, the mod lets skeletons and their mob friends grow alongside you, keeping encounters fresh and challenging.

Beside the general problems that come with big mods such as performance challenges and choice paralysis, this Minecraft roleplay mod pack is also tailored to a specific type of player. If you don’t really care for NPC quests, a good chunk of this mod pack becomes uninteresting to you. However, even in that case you can simply ignore this aspect. If you like playing a mod with a focus on lore and quests, however, there are few out there with as much focus as Cisco's Fantasy Medieval RPG.

ElocinDev's Prominence II RPG

Strengths:

• flexible character development
• multiplayer compatibility

Weaknesses:

• buggy updates

This mod is not only capable of turning your Minecraft adventure into an RPG. Rather, this is a genuine MMORPG Minecraft mod. That means integrated multiplayer servers and even official SMP servers. Of course, a Minecraft server from G-Portal can also provide you with a solid platform to play on. Or you can set up your own server with our server guide, but we digress. Prominence II also allows you to customize your character and your weapons by giving you a diverse skill tree and opportunities to create your personal weapons.

When it comes to multiplayer, the possibility of creating problems by introducing updates comes up a lot. Therefore, you should be careful whenever a new update comes out. Additionally, when more than one player is involved, certain combinations of gear and skills can easily become overpowered. You should watch out to not make this adventure too easy for yourself. But if you and your friends want to join in on a fantasy adventure right out of a good fantasy book, Prominence II RPG is the Minecraft MMORPG mod for you!

choupicul's Calamity RPG II: The Modern Forge RPG Adventure

Strengths:

• modern setting
• innovative mechanics
• story-driven gameplay

Weaknesses:

• content depth
• compatibility issues

Last but not least is the Calamity RPG II mod, a fresh take on the established medieval RPG. With this Minecraft roleplay mod pack, you can not only explore ancient ruins but also craft futuristic technology using the objects you find there. Explore a place where future, now and past melt into one.
As for the problems, they lie in the number of mods this mod pack contains. It makes updating them difficult and can lead to compatibility issues with other Minecraft RPG mods. The mod pack, while having a fresh concept, also lacks some of the depth the other Minecraft RPG mods we have shown you contain. But if you’re a veteran that has already played through anything else, the Calamity II RPG mod brings a whole new genre to your digital world.
