Sons of the Forest Guide: Building Part 2
In Part 1 of our Sons of the Forest Building Guide we explained how to build your first base and which tips and hints you should follow. Now follows Part 2 with the inner workings of your base, food procurement and important defenses.
Take a look at Part 1 of our Sons of the Forest Building Guide to learn everything about building your first base and more helpful tips and tricks.
Bed, campfire and food
You will quickly realize that building your base and living on Horror Island is very tiring. To be able to rest, you should put a bed in your base, where you can then save and sleep. Besides the bed, a campfire is also important: to cook meat and fish, boil water, cook dishes, burn cannibals and warm up on rainy and cold days.
At best, set up two drying racks to hang raw meat and fish on, so you are well supplied in the winter. Since you cannot simply drink the water in Sons of the Forest without suffering damage, you must either boil it or collect it with a rain collector - for this, however, it must rain often and this is usually only the case in autumn and in winter the collector is useless, since the water in it freezes.
Food is an important issue in Sons of the Forest from the beginning and the easiest way to get it is by using a small animal trap or fish trap. Place the trap in a place where many small animals are running around and check every now and then if a small animal has already gotten lost there. If you find one, you can cut out the flesh with "E" and set up the trap again with "E". Of course you place the fish trap in the water, preferably in a river, and there you can also check at regular intervals whether fish have already become trapped.

Hint: use Kelvin here as well. He can get you a lot of fish in a short time and that's especially practical, because you can eat fish raw in Sons of the Forest.
Spiked walls and defensive wall
Before you fully devote yourself to building, which we can understand, because the building system in Sons of the Forest is really fun, you should take care of defense, because not only the attacks become more frequent and larger over time - when winter comes, enemies usually become even more aggressive than they already are and especially built at the lake, you should provide proper defense to the water.
Defensive wall with gate
Depending on the building site you should rebuild your base with a defensive wall and a gate, so that the enemy creatures have a big obstacle to overcome or do not even manage to leave it behind. For a palisade you have to ram whole tree logs into the ground and place one at a time, this is indicated again with a white circle that docks to the previous log. Once your wall is standing, you still have to sharpen the logs at the top and you can equip it with a gate, so that Kelvin and Virginia still have a way to get out and go collect stuff, for example.
Spikes
These nasty little beasts do more damage to enemies than you might think and, especially when placed in multiple rows, provide a sure defense against all creatures. For the spikes you need simple sticks, which you put into the ground, also a white circle shows you where to put them, and then you have to hit them with the axe in the appropriate direction - an arrow shows you the direction. You can additionally reinforce them with stones, so that there is less space to get through - but be careful, because not only the enemies suffer damage from the spikes, also the game character is properly taken, only the NPCs suffer no damage.
Note: if you see a circle with a dashed line when setting the sticks, this is the ability to set a fence, but we don't want that at that moment and you have to play a bit with the distances to find the right position.
Spiked walls - effective defense
As an upgrade to spikes, spiked walls are effective defenses that, especially when placed in water, make it almost impossible for enemies to get to your base. For spiked walls you need whole or half tree logs, tree halves and sticks, depending on their size. Once you have built the wall, place the sticks, but be careful, because once you have placed the first row, you can easily ram them into your own body.
Tree houses and ziplines
In the book you will find blueprints for elements that you can place in a tree and therefore build your own tree house. High up in the air, you are of course well protected from attacks, and a small tree house makes a good shelter, whether for the beginning or when traveling across the island. In general, it is recommended to spread several bases over the island to be always well supplied on longer trips.
Ziplines are handy ropes that allow you to float across the island at high speed, should you ever have enough ziplines spread across the island. In order to zipline, you must first find the Rope Gun, which is hidden in a cave to the west. Before heading to the cave, equip yourself well and have enough food and medicine with you, because caves are not fun in Sons of the Forest. You can find out everything about the caves and what else you can find there in our Sons of the Forest Caves Guide.

Note: you can also use stretched ziplines to transport trees to your base faster, which makes it a lot easier to build bigger structures.
Flower beds, birdhouses and torches
Besides meat for food, in Sons of the Forest you can also find all sorts of herbs and berries that you can turn into health and energy mixtures. Build your own flower beds and plant the seeds there, wait a few days and harvest the crops. Once you have made your first bow, you will of course need arrows as ammunition, made from small stones, sticks and feathers. You can easily collect feathers with birdhouses, which you place on a wall or a pole and can then take out feathers at intervals.
Since it gets extremely dark at night in Sons of the Forest, you should think about the lighting. To do this, you have several options of torches, which you can place as wall torches at your base or stand torches in the immediate vicinity. Skull torches are also very inviting to make enemies feel welcome right away.

Solar power and other blueprints
In addition to traditional torches, there is the possibility to build solar panels on ramps or on the ground. You can then connect wire to the sides and in turn light bulbs to them, and as long as the sun is shining, you can enjoy a well-lit base. Light bulbs, wire and solar panels can be found in crates, shelters, camps, caves and bunkers.
In the book you will find a number of instructions and blueprints, including, for example, a lookout, which will come in handy if you want to keep an eye out for possible enemies and always be up to date. Other instructions and blueprints: for example, a bridge to cross rivers better, armor racks or shelves that provide storage space for all kinds of items.

Large and elaborate buildings
After playing for a while, you may eventually wonder how to continue building and expanding your base in peace and without great interruptions from enemies. You cannot officially change the difficulty level of your save game afterwards, but it is possible to start a new individual save game in which you can, for example, play peacefully or set the aggressiveness, etc. of the enemies to low and building should work more easily. To get your previous save game to the new one, you need to put your savegame files into the right folder.
Important: you can turn off the structural damage in the server settings and in the game, so that attacks will not damage your base and you do not have to be constantly behind with the repair tool.
