The basic steps of Valheim are well known to you and you have already won your first battles? Then our Valheim guide for advanced players might be just the right thing for you to dive deeper into all aspects of Valheim. The first part is about helpful buffs, storage space, ores and the forges including upgrades.

Fishing and cooking for food buffs

Unlike in other games of the survival genre, it is not possible to starve in Valheim. However, you can still fish and cook to obtain and use food with various and important buffs. We have already prepared a Guide to Fishing and Cooking in Valheim for you here.

Most important food and potions

Whether to improve your stamina, health or Eitr, here are the most important foods for you:

  • Seeker Aspic: since the Mistlands update, Eitr has been a big issue when it comes to magic in Valheim. This food gives you 85 Eitr and you need the following ingredients: 2x Seeker Meat, 2x Magecap Mushrooms and 2x Royal Jelly
  • Fish n'bread: this dish is made from uncooked Fish n'bread and gives you the most stamina points with 90. These are the ingredients you need for Uncooked Fish n'bread: 2x Bread dough and 1x Anglerfish - the uncooked Fish n'bread must be prepared in a stone oven
  • Misthare Supreme: thanks to this dish you get 85 health points and you do not even have to do much for it: as with the Fish n'bread, the Misthare Supreme is prepared from Uncooked Misthare Supreme in the stone oven - the ingredients for the Uncooked Misthare Supreme are: 3x Jotun puffs, 2x Carrot and 1x Hare meat

Hint: if you need other food and your current one is still not used up, you can use the so-called Bukeperries and eat them, so you can set your stomach respectively your food slots to zero and eat other dishes.

Now the most important potions in Valheim will follow, including recipes and their effects:

  • Fire Resistance Wine: this barley wine makes you resistant to fire damage and reduces the damage. The following ingredients are needed: 10x Barley and 10x Cloudberries - must be left in the fermenter for 2 days
  • Frost Resistance Mead: you will probably make this mead the first time before you enter the Mountains biome, in order to be able to withstand the frost. The recipe includes: 10x Honey, 5x Thistle, 2x Blood Bag, and 1x Greydwarf Eye - must also remain in the fermenter for 2 days
  • Poison Resistance Mead: as the name suggests, this mead is for reducing the poison damage taken and is best drunk right before a fight. For the recipe you need the following ingredients: 10x Honey, 10x Coal, 5x Thistle and 1x Neck-Tail - for this you also have to plan 2 days in the fermenter

Always keep calm - the Resting Buff

You receive the Resting Buff if your environment, such as your house, is well equipped in terms of comfort value. The higher the comfort value, the more effectively you can rest and get the buff faster. When the "Rested" buff lights up in your HUD, your stamina regeneration immediately increases by 100% and life regeneration by 50% - so make sure your environment is as comfortable as possible, because the buff is not to be scoffed at and lasts longer the higher the comfort value is.

Chests and carts - more space for loot

At first, you will probably be fine with normal chests for a while, but pretty soon you will realize that there are really a lot of loot possibilities in Valheim. In order to keep your loot well stowed, you will need reinforced chests that give you more space. If you have already used iron for crafting, you have the instructions for the reinforced chests and you need the following resources: 10x Fine wood and 2x Iron.

The carts are also helpful if you want to move a lot of items, especially heavy ones, or if you are planning a big looting tour, because the cart has no weight limit. If you run out of reinforced chests, you can also put carts in your storage. At the workbench you can craft and repair the cart as soon as you start working with bronze. The following resources are needed: 20x Wood and 10x Bronze Nails.

Finding and mining Darkwood & Ores

Unlike other wood in Valheim, you cannot obtain Darkwood from trees, you have to produce it yourself. To do this, you need to find a Tar Pit in the Plains biome or collect it from so-called Growths, but beware: they emit poisonous black Tar Gases and are quite aggressive. Once you have collected Tar, new building instructions will unlock and you will be able to create various new structures with a noble appearance.

Locations for ores and how to mine them

Before you start searching for veins of ore and run off in a hurry, you will of course need the good old pickaxe to be able to mine the ores as well. Defeat the first boss Eikthyr and get the item Hard Antlers from him and use it to craft a pickaxe with some wood. A Guide to the first boss Eikthyr and all following bosses can be found here. Note that for higher quality ores such as silver, you will need an iron pickaxe later in the game.

  • Tin is probably the first ore you will come across. In the Black Forest you will find some veins of tin near water
  • Copper is the next best ore after tin and is also found in the Black Forest. Take a close look at the moss covered rocks and make sure you have mined everything from the copper vein
  • Bronze is needed for the first real metal armor, but it cannot be found as an ore deposit in Valheim, you have to make it with a combination of Tin and Copper in a forge - another way is to destroy the fireplaces in the Frost Caves in the Mountains biome
  • Iron can be found in the Swamp biome as iron scrap in, for example, sunken crypts or with the Wishbone of Bonemass
  • Silver in Valheim means a bit more work for you, because it is found in the Mountains biome, and this is known for not exactly comfortable-warm temperatures. Equip yourself with frost-resistant clothing and mead, craft the Iron Pickaxe, and grab the Wishbone to track down Silver Ore
  • Obsidian can also be found in the Mountains biome, but it is easier to spot than Silver, as it is a small rock formation sticking out of the mountains
  • Black Metal can be found in chests in the Plains biome or dropped as loot from the Fulings in the same biome, but be aware that these little beasts are stronger than they might seem at first glance
  • Flametal is so far only found in the still very rudimentary Ashlands and currently has no relevance to the game, but Iron Gate has already let it be known that a major update and therefore an overhaul of the Ashlands is to come

Building and leveling up a Forge

After the workbench and the smelting furnace, you will of course want to go further in Valheim and build a proper forge to finally be able to process and repair metal. When you build the forge, make sure that there is enough space left around it so that you can upgrade it as the game progresses and it is close to a workbench. You must craft the following items and place them nearby to upgrade the forge to the highest level:

  • Cooler: you will need 25x Fine Wood and 10x Copper to cool the forge
  • Anvil: you can make the anvil with only 5x Wood and 2x Bronze
  • Smith's Anvil: this anvil is made with 20x Iron and 5x Wood
  • Tool rack: the tool rack for the forge needs 15x Iron and 10x Wood for its production
  • Bellows: For the bellows you need 5x Wood, 5x Deer hide and 4x Chain
  • Grinding wheel: for this you need 25x Wood and 1x Sharpening stone

Building and leveling up the Black Forge

Since the Mistlands update, there is the Black Forge, which unlocks exciting new armor, weapons and other items to craft so that you have a good chance of survival in the Mistlands and can stand your ground, especially against the strong enemies.

In order to build the Black Forge, you must first mine Yggdrasil wood and Black Marble - but for this you will need the Black Metal Axe and Black Metal Pickaxe. Once you have the wood and marble together, you will also need 5x Black Core, which you can find in the infested mines. Once the Black Forge is up and running, you can upgrade it to level 2 with a cooling system. For the cooling you need the following resources: 5x Iron, 5x Copper and 4x Black Marble.
