Waiting for the Minecraft Movie

Every once in a while, rumors about a new Minecraft movie have been circulating online. And every single time it turned out to be fake or fan-made, right? Well, no, there have been real rumors, too. But there never was a final Minecraft movie. So, why would we tell you about these rumors? We don’t! We’re here to tell you great news: there is a real Minecraft movie coming to theaters next year!

The Minecraft Movie Timeline

Now, the timeline for the new Minecraft movie is messy, to say the least. It is one of these movies that have been in the making for what feels like forever. Apparently, the Minecraft movie development timeline already crossed the 10-year-mark. Well, let’s keep this short, here is a brief timeline for the new Minecraft movie:

• 2013: Warner Bros. acquires the film rights from Mojang AB
• 2014-2016: early development stages, with frequent changes in directors and writers, planned to release in 2019
• 2019: release date is delayed from May 24, 2019, to March 4, 2022, due to changes in the production team
• 2020: the movie is removed from Warner Bros.' release schedule due to the COVID-19 pandemic
• 2022: Jason Momoa enters final talks to star in the film, Jared Hess is confirmed as the director
• 2023: additional cast members are announced, filming is scheduled to begin in New Zealand in August but is delayed due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike
• 2024: filming begins in early 2024 and was completed by mid-April 2024

This timeline highlights the Minecraft movie project's development over the years, showcasing the various delays and changes in direction before reaching its current stage. As you can see, the development was turbulent, to say the least.

What We Know so far

You want an honest answer, don’t you? Well, sadly, we don’t know much yet. Still, let’s go over all we do know about the minecraft movie. From a few cast members to a broad concept of a plot, it is not much, but it is something. And even though we will be surprised by the result, we can still assume and guess, can’t we? Exactly! Who’s gonna stop us?

Who’s Part of the Minecraft Movie Cast?

Great news, folks: we already know some names! As mentioned in the timeline above, we know that Jason Momoa, known for his roles in Game of Thrones and Aquaman, will be in the Minecraft movie. Jack Black - who is known for his comedic talent - will also be in the movie. Gaming fans already know him from his role as Bowser in The Super Mario Bros. movie from 2023. In Minecraft, he will now actually be playing Steve, as we saw in the first trailer released for the film. A good fit, right? During the 15 Year Minecraft Anniversary, the two even released a video on various social media channels, so it was foreseeable that this would be a fun combo. Also, as previously announced, British comedy icon Matt Berry has joined the cast. Various media outlets have reported that the following actors and actresses will also be part of the project:

• Emma Myers
• Jennifer Coolidge
• Kate McKinnon
• Jemaine Clement

We might not know who they will portray, but this Minecraft movie cast predestines the Minecraft Movie to be a hit in theaters, doesn’t it?

What is the Minecraft Movie about?

You’re waiting for some information about the plot, huh? For a while now, the closest we had to a plot summary was a statement by a developer about the Minecraft movie version supposed to release in 2022: a teenage girl and her friends going on an adventure to save the world. Well, yeah, that kind of changed?

Don’t get us wrong, that could still be the general plot! In this case, it is likely that Emma Myers will take on the role of said teenage girl. And let’s be real, the Minecraft movie cast would make a fantastic ‘unlikely group of adventurers’! However, the second official trailer taught us a bit about what we can expect by giving us some background information on some characters and the world.

The Minecraft Movie Plot – A Guess

Most importantly: the real world and the Minecraft world both exist in the movie. Our main character Steve always had a fascination with the mines in the real world. One day, he found a special ore that probably transported him into Minecraft. But is he trapped there? It kind of seems so, don’t you think? Anyways, he makes the best out of it and gets accustomed to the world and its tricks. From our end, there are still some questions, though:

• What is he doing all day long?
• Doesn’t he feel lonely?
• What happens to him when mobs hurt him? (Really, we’re curious. Does he have a health bar?)
• Does he even want to go back home?
• How would he react if other real people would appear in this world all of a sudden?

At least we will get an answer to the last question. A group of seemingly very different people steps through a portal into Minecraft. Now, it is Steve's job to show them how to survive: crafting, eating, fighting, not staying outside at night. It looks like a little ‘first steps guide’ for Minecraft. One where things can go horribly wrong but could also be really funny.

Oh, and there seems to be a piglin threat from the Nether. We are pretty sure that this mob will be a major part of the movie and therefore it makes sense that we’re not supposed to see everything just yet. Will the ender dragon join the chaos? Will they build a portal we’ve never seen before? Will Steve stay in Minecraft? Still so many questions, still so much time left to endure waiting.

Finally: A Minecraft Movie Release Date!

Saving the best for last, of course. There is an official Minecraft movie release date! According to the public plans, the movie will come to theaters on April 4, 2025! Now, we just have to keep our fingers crossed that it won’t be postponed again. In the meantime, we can watch the awesome trailer for the movie over and over again in endless repeat mode and pick apart every scene, such as the spooky sheep and llama.

Are you excited for the Minecraft movie? We are definitely intrigued! Anyway, the style of the trailer is completely different from what we had in mind, but somehow positively different ... crazy different ... wacky different ... and somehow also a bit scary. Definitely an interesting choice to incorporate the different mobs of the Block game into a live action movie. The visuals also give an idea of the answer to the following question: Is it going to be a serious action movie or a fun adventure movie? Actually, it doesn't really matter. After all these years, we'll definitely be watching it. But until then, we still have some time to kill. So I guess it's time to hop back on a Minecraft server from G-Portal until we can see the game's world come to life in the Minecraft movie 2025. See you in the movie theaters!
