In the popular zombie survival game, there are all kinds of resources that are important and crucial for your game progress and survival. The most important resources include iron and coal. In the GPORTAL blog, we explain where you can find, mine and use these materials efficiently.

Where to find iron in 7 Days to Die

You can find iron throughout the world of 7 Days to Die, but there are a few ways that have proven to be particularly efficient in obtaining iron. One option is, of course, the simple iron mining process. In 7 Days to Die, you can mine iron ore nodes, which appear as dark brown spots on the map. Here, it is advisable to continue mining iron deposits on the surface and thus possibly find veins running underground that promise even more iron.

To further maximize iron mining, you can, for example, use perks that mean increased damage to materials and thus shorten the mining time or increase the amount of resources mined. Both of these of course ensure that your ore mining becomes even more productive. You can also make progress with the tools you use to mine iron. As the game progresses, use high-quality tools such as the steel axe, but keep an eye on your stamina. Clothing is another point, because if you wear the full mining armor, your mining tools will be used up more slowly.

Otherwise, of course, the usual way is still open, as with many other items: looting. Keep an eye out for old metal objects such as cars or shelves, as these can be dismantled using tools - this will give you scrap iron. You can visit various buildings that hoard items made of iron, among other things, to take the items with you and scrap them for iron. If you have no chance with either method or you need more iron, you can also go via the 7 Days to Die traders. They also sell iron from time to time, but only in small quantities and at a very high price.

What you need the iron for

Iron is essential, especially for higher-quality weapons, tools and building materials. To do this, you need to melt down the iron you have painstakingly collected in a forge and use it to produce wrought iron and, as the game progresses, forged steel. Furthermore, you will always need iron to keep your tools and weapons in good condition and, of course, crafting new weapons and, above all, tools is a recurring theme. Iron is also essential for your base, as it needs to be secure, especially against the zombie hordes during the Blood Moon Nights. To do this, you can use iron doors, for example, which can better withstand the attacks of the respective zombies.

Where to find coal in 7 Days to Die

Just like iron, coal is also a very important and valuable resource that you should definitely have in stock in 7 Days to Die. Just like iron, you can make your way to the black dots on the map of Navezgane to find coal. Coal can be found in all sorts of places in various biomes and can be mined from the surface towards the ground to find deep coal veins.

The most important biome when it comes to coal mining is the Burnt Forest. The name already suggests that there is a lot of coal waiting for you here. You simply have to cut down the burnt trees in the burnt forest to obtain coal as well as wood. So if you are not only looking for coal, but also for wood, then this is a real highlight for you. Otherwise, you can also find coal simply by scavenging, primarily in ovens and grills. You can also buy a small amount of coal from traders, but similar to iron, this is not the best way to get coal.

Note: There is a very interesting POI called “Bear-N-Land Coal Mining Factory”, which is located in the desert region. It is teeming with aggressive enemies, but the work is definitely worth it, as you will find a rich coal deposit here.

What you need coal for in 7 Days to Die

In 7 Days to Die, coal has important uses for various crafting recipes. Let's take a look at what these are:

  • Gunpowder: Coal is definitely most important for the production of gunpowder. This in turn is used to make ammunition, which will regularly save your life in 7 Days to Die
  • Fuel: There is another use for coal as fuel. Forges and campfires require fuel, coal is good for this, but you should use wood or something similar so that you can save your coal for more important things
