As in any other game from the survival genre, Valheim of course also has various weapons that have different types of damage and are therefore the better choice against certain bosses. What kind of weapons are available and a guide to them can be found here.

Melee weapons

Whether it's an axe, club or sword, the melee weapons in Valheim offer a lot of variety with different range, speed and some even have secondary attacks. If you carry a one-handed weapon, you can also carry a shield or torch in the other hand. Most of the weapons have a 3-hit combo and your character will move forward a little bit after each hit with most of the weapons.

Here is a small list of selected melee weapons from Valheim with their features:

  • Stone Axe: one of the first weapons you are probably going to craft in Valheim, you need 5x Wood and 4x Stone for it - maximum damage: 30
  • Battle Axe: the first two-handed axe in Valheim, you need 30x Ancient Bark, 35x Iron and 4x Leather Scraps for the Battle Axe - maximum damage: 88
  • Silver Sword: the Silver Sword's secondary attack deals 3x damage and has a longer range, you need 2x Wood, 40x Silver, 3x Leather Scraps and 5x Iron - maximum damage: 93
  • Frostner: the Frostner is the fourth one-handed club and due to its very high recoil it is a good choice when fighting multiple enemies, you need 10x Ancient Bark, 30x Silver, 5x Ymir Flesh and 5x Freeze Gland to craft it - maximum damage: 58
  • Black Metal Atgeir: this is the third staff weapon and it has a long range and 2x damage on the last attack, you need 10x Fine Wood, 30x Black Metal and 5x Linen Thread to make it - maximum damage: 123
  • Porcupine / Morningstar: the Morningstar weapon with its combo of blunt and piercing damage becomes one of the most effective weapons in combat against many enemies and you need 5x Fine Wood, 20x Iron, 5x Needle and 10x Linen Thread to make it - maximum damage: 63

Ranged weapons

Bows and crossbows are the ranged weapons in Valheim. They are equipped with various arrows and bolts and can be fired at enemies from a distance. Unlike the bow, the crossbow in Valheim is slower to reload, but it does far more damage per shot than a bow and has a longer range.

We have a small list of selected ranged weapons, arrows and bolts from Valheim for you:

  • Huntsman Bow: this bow is the third and was made in the Iron Age and compared to others it is quieter, to craft it you need 10x Fine Wood, 20x Iron, 10x Feathers and 2x Deer Hide - Pierce Damage: 42/51
  • Draugr Fang: the fourth bow comes from the Silver Age and adds poison damage to arrows. With its glowing effect you are easy to spot even when sneaking, you need 10x Ancient Bark, 20x Silver, 2x Deer Hide and 10x Guck - Pierce damage: 47/56 and Poison damage: 5/20
  • Arbalest: made in the Black Forge and can only be fired every 6 seconds. The bolts shot are much faster than arrows from bows and fly in a straight line, you need 10x Wood, 8x Iron and 4x Root for the Arbalest - Pierce Damage: 200/209
  • Fire Arrows: adds fire and pierce damage and requires 8x Wood, 8x Resin, and 2x Feather to make a 20 stack - max damage: 27

Magic weapons

The magic weapons in Valheim require Eitr to function. Eitr is the magical resource that appears in a purple bar in your HUD when you eat food containing Eitr, and is also used for weapons and armor. When it comes to magical weapons, there are two types: elemental magic and blood magic. Note that blood magic weapons can consume up to 40% of your current health per spell. The damage dealt, Eitr consumed, and health points used depend on your character's skill level.

An overview of magic weapons can be found here:

  • Staff of Embers: the main attack is a fireball that deals blunt damage and an explosion that deals AoE damage to NPCs. You'll need 20x Yggdrasil Wood, 4x Surtling Core, and 16x Refined Eitr - Blunt damage: 120 and Fire damage: 120/138
  • Staff of Frost: the primary attack consists of rapid, icy shards that hit enemies with rather low accuracy and slow them down with their frost effect. Hint: Wet enemies are susceptible to frost damage and therefore take more damage, you need 20x Yggdrasil Wood, 4x Freeze Gland and 16x Refined Eitr - Frost Damage: 30/36
  • Staff of Protection: The main focus of this weapon is to create a protective barrier around you, other players, and tamed creatures, but not only does it require a lot of Eitr, it also drains a lot of your health. You will need 20x Yggdrasil Wood, 4x Blood Clot, and 16x Refined Eitr to make the staff
  • Dead raiser: when you cast the spell of this weapon, a skeleton subordinate to you appears and follows you around attacking any enemy near you, this skeleton is additionally stronger than others. However, this spell requires 100 Eitr and also up to 40% of your health and it is random with which equipment the skeleton appears, sometimes it is worth spawning another one and to craft it you need 10x Bone Fragments, 16x Refined Eitr and 4x Skeleton Trophy

Damage types, shields and bombs

In Valheim, all damage you can deal to enemies has a specific type. Following is a quick overview of the damage types and what type of weapon they are delivered from:

  • Blunt damage: one or two-handed clubs
  • Slash damage: one- or two-handed axes and swords
  • Pierce damage: Staff weapons, spears, pickaxes, and bows
  • Half slash and half pierce damage: Knives
  • Additional damage such as fire, frost, and spirit damage: magical weapons or others

But there are exceptions such as weapons that deal elemental damage, for example, the Frostner or Draugr Fang. Some clubs like the Stagbreaker and Porcupine / Morningstar deal piercing damage in addition to blunt damage.

Damage types are especially important if you want to deal with specific enemies. For example, Blobs and Skeletons are weak to Blunt damage and Stone Golem to Pierce damage.

Blocking and bombs

You can block in Valheim with some weapons, such as the two-handed maces, but shields that you can carry with one-handed weapons are even better for this. Round shields have less blocking power than the imposing tower shields, but round shields can parry enemy attacks. This means that the attack can be countered and the opponent is briefly stunned. Tower shields can't parry, have a higher weight and slow down your running speed.

Furthermore, in Valheim you have the possibility to create and use Ooze or Bile bombs. Here is a short list of their abilities and how you can make them:

  • Ooze Bomb: this bomb, after being thrown, casts an AoE poison cloud with a radius of 4 meters, which lasts for about 10 seconds and you need 5x Leather Scraps, 10x Ooze and 3x Resin to make it
  • Bile Bomb: this bomb again casts an AoE cloud of fire and poison after it is thrown, and keeps renewing damage up to a maximum of 125 as long as the enemy remains in the cloud. You need the following resources: 1x Sap, 1x Bile Bag and 3x Resin

Rockets from the Ballista

Rockets represent another weapon in Valheim. You can launch them with a catapult-like structure called "Ballista". You can load the Ballista with up to 20 missiles of the same type - note, however, that it fires immediately after the first missile is loaded. The damage depends on the missile loaded: 75 damage with the wooden missile and 120 damage with the black metal missile.
